Try Not to Crash
"Try Not To Crash." The last thing my instructor said when I went solo. Sound familiar?
Welcome to the only flying podcast where the pilot's still figuring it out.
Some pilots like to think they know everything. Some people think they do. Me, I'm still looking for the checklist, still trying to remember which end of the runway to take off from.
Try Not To Crash is for everyone who's still learning, which is all of us. I'm Wayne. I learned to fly in my early fifties, and I own a one-fifth share in a Cessna 172 called KK, based at Elstree just north of London. I'm a private pilot, not an instructor, so don't come here for a lesson. Come here for the honest version: what it's actually like to learn, to stay current, to fly a share, and to muddle through general aviation in the UK without pretending I've got it all worked out.
I'll talk about my own flying journey, the good days and the bad, and a fair few of the cock-ups in between. And because everyone likes to think pilots are sky gods (we are, obviously) who must have an opinion on absolutely everything, I'll have a nosy natter about the wider flying world too, the stuff that affects how and where we get to fly. What I won't do is sit here calling the cause of an accident. That's not my job and I'm not qualified for it. But I'll gladly tell you how it all feels from someone who prefers to fly with the windows in front, not at the side.
Student pilot, later-in-life learner, or just someone who likes aeroplanes and honest stories? Pull up a headset. We never stop learning, and the day we do is the day we should stop flying.
You'll find me on YouTube as WhiskeyAlphaPilot, where I actually show you the flying, and at whiskeyalphapilot.com. Be safe, have fun, and of course try not to crash.

Welcome to Try Not To Crash, my journey into the aviation work as a 55 year novice pilot.
Join me, as I humorously recount my journey through the world of general aviation in the UK. From the whims of weather to the quirks of my trusty Cessna, flying isn't as straightforward as it might seem.
I'm not your go-to for aviation news or crash analyses, but I promise a genuine account of the highs and lows of my aviation adventures.
If you've ever wondered what it’s like to learn to fly through the eyes of a n older pilot, this podcast will be your backstage pass.
Whether you're curious about aviation or just enjoy a good chuckle, I invite you along for the ride. And remember, while my landings might not always be on point, the stories are sure to be entertaining. Buckle up, stay safe, and let's embark on this airborne escapade together!

I'm a UK based private pilot (PPL(A)), who started to learn to fly in my early 50s. I passed (just), but every flight is a learning experience.
I currently own 1/5 of a Cessna 172 - but I am not sure which bit is mine.

Hello everyone , it's time for a bit of introduction . It's Wayne here from the Try Not To Crash podcast , the only place on the planet where you can listen to a 55-year-old novice pilot who hasn't a clue trying to explain aerodynamic theory . Only joking . I'm not a qualified flight instructor and you should not be using a podcast or any form of social media to learn how to fly . That's the job of pilots and that's why they have those big headsets so they can listen to their favourite podcaster . Hopefully me All joking aside , I've decided to resurrect this podcast , as it's fallen into the doldrums , a little bit like my flying .
Speaker 0The good news is I pulled my finger out and , subject to weather , I should be able to go flying and hopefully I'm going to take you with me . Why is this podcast called Try Not To Crash ? Well , that is the last thing my instructor said to me on my first solo flight , and it was quite poignant and quite useful , because fundamentally , that's what all pilots are trying to do we try not to crash , as crashing hurts , so I'm going to try and avoid it . Incidentally , you won't hear me talking about crashes or other things that are going on in the aviation world , quite simply because I don't have the experience or the authority to talk about such things . I'll leave that for the so-called experts . What you are going to hear about is my experiences , firstly as a student pilot and now as a novice pilot , learning to fly and trying to navigate GA flying around the UK . It is not as easy as it sounds .
Speaker 0My main efforts are into my YouTube channel . You can find me on YouTube . All you need to do is search for Whiskey Alpha Pilot and hopefully , if everything works , you find me . But equally , if you just want to listen to my dulcet tones , then the podcast is the way to go . If you have any questions or comments or things you'd like me to do , then please just track me down on social media and send me a message . If you're going to complain about my landings not being on the center line , then please don't bother , as my poor little Cessna is fed up being screamed at every time it doesn't want to land on the center line . I keep telling it to keep straight , but you know what aircraft are like anyway . This is only supposed to be an introduction , so I'll let you get on . But whatever you're doing , please be safe and have fun . Thanks for listening . Bye .
